The 30th Anniversary Commemoration and Workers’ Innovation Awards Ceremony of the Shanghai Outstanding Invention Selection Competition was held at the Shanghai Science Hall on December 20. Our institute’s sole submitted project, “Self-Insulating High-Strength Prefabricated Masonry Blocks,” was awarded the Gold Prize in the 30th Shanghai Outstanding Invention Selection Competition. This year’s competition evaluated a total of 1,426 entries, resulting in the awarding of 68 Gold Prizes, 221 Silver Prizes, and 268 Bronze Prizes.
The Shanghai Outstanding Invention Selection Competition is a prestigious science and technology award established in 1987. Approved by the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, it is jointly organized by the Shanghai Federation of Trade Unions, the Shanghai Intellectual Property Bureau, the Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League, the Shanghai Association for Science and Technology, the Shanghai Invention Association, and other relevant organizations. To date, the competition has been held for 30 sessions, effectively encouraging employees to engage in inventive and creative activities in their respective posts, enhancing enterprises’ capacity for independent innovation, and promoting scientific and technological progress and economic development in Shanghai.
The self-insulating, high-strength prefabricated masonry block is a solid component made of concrete, featuring two rows of thermal-insulation cavities that form a continuous insulation layer along the wall plane. This design eliminates common issues associated with external wall insulation, such as cracking and degraded thermal performance, while ensuring that the insulation lasts as long as the building itself. The block is equipped with vertical and horizontal grouting chambers, allowing for the independent placement of vertical and horizontal reinforcement bars; during grouting, the concrete flows freely in both the vertical and horizontal directions, achieving monolithic integration, high strength, and excellent seismic performance. As a result, it can be used in high-rise buildings to replace load-bearing shear walls. This invention addresses the shortcomings of external wall insulation in high-rise construction, thereby realizing the goal of aligning wall insulation durability with the service life of the building. When employed in high-rise load-bearing walls, this block reduces the amount of reinforcement required for traditional shear walls, thus lowering construction costs. Moreover, by eliminating the mortar-based masonry process and enabling prefabricated assembly, the block represents a green wall material.
