Company Development History:

Shanghai Municipal Institute of Architectural Design was established in February 1987 and is affiliated with the Shanghai Municipal Housing and Land Resources Administration. In 2004, it was restructured into a limited liability company. Over the past three decades and more, the institute has grown into a comprehensive Class-A architectural design research institute with a full range of specialties, strong technical capabilities, and expertise spanning architectural planning and design, real estate investment planning and consulting, as well as research and appraisal of building projects.

  Company Development Stage:

  Phase One: (1987–1992)

The design institute was established to primarily undertake planning and design for various industrial and civil buildings, urban renewal and renovation of existing housing stock, as well as technical consulting and surveying and design services. Despite facing numerous challenges, the institute has persevered and continued to explore new avenues for development.

  Phase II: (1992–2004)

Internally, a contract-based system of technical and economic accountability was implemented. While the core design business continued to develop steadily, the firm expanded its scope of operations by establishing independent subsidiaries for supervision and surveying. As a result, the institute’s development pattern of “complementary strengths and holistic advancement” took shape, with output value and revenue increasing substantially year after year. At the same time, collaboration in areas such as prestressing technology and structural reinforcement was strengthened.

The implementation of the ISO 9000 quality management system has been comprehensively promoted, resulting in a strong market reputation and remarkable achievements in areas such as industrial and civil construction, urban renewal and renovation of old residential buildings, building quality inspection, seismic evaluation, and structural reinforcement.

  Phase Three: (2004–Present)

The enterprise restructuring was completed, the East China Normal University Science and Technology Park was registered, and localized management of the enterprise was implemented. A limited liability company with corporate governance structure, jointly established by social enterprise legal-person shares and employee shares of the design institute, was set up, enabling a transformation in internal operations and management in accordance with the Company Law. Meanwhile, reforms of the distribution system were continuously deepened, further boosting the enterprise’s economic performance.

By expanding beyond Shanghai into surrounding regional markets, the company has established relatively stable business footholds and achieved notable results, including the formulation and implementation of strategic initiatives as well as the attainment of tangible outcomes. In particular, business in building inspection, seismic evaluation, and structural reinforcement has grown rapidly, with the company now ranking among the industry leaders in both project volume and reputation. The company has undertaken research projects commissioned by the Municipal Construction Commission and several other projects under the National “11th Five-Year” Science and Technology Support Program. Furthermore, efforts to pursue excellence and technological advancement have been deepened, resulting in numerous projects receiving municipal- and ministerial-level awards for outstanding design, securing two national patents, and winning awards for multiple research projects.

  Future development approach:

On the basis of strengthened market research and in accordance with the overarching work guidelines of “ensuring stable operations, enhancing management, accelerating development, building a brand, and establishing a strong corporate image,” while safeguarding the steady and healthy growth of our core business, we will optimize our business structure, organizational framework, and resource allocation; concurrently, we will refine our operational practices, streamline our operating mechanisms, and effectively enhance the overall strength of the company (or institute), thereby pursuing sustained, stable, and healthy enterprise development.

Strengthen talent development, with a particular focus on fostering innovative talent; boldly cultivate and select a contingent of young, high-caliber professionals who possess strong innovative capabilities and are adept at integrating technical expertise, managerial skills, and market-oriented thinking. Leverage science and technology to drive growth, build brands through innovation, and enhance the company’s image by delivering premium-quality services.

We must steadfastly pursue technological advancement and innovation, enhance the contribution of technological progress to the sustainable development of enterprises, and strengthen corporate competitiveness. To this end, we need to accelerate the commercialization of scientific and technological achievements and actively promote the widespread application of new materials and cutting-edge energy-saving technologies in residential housing, thereby effectively implementing China’s strategy for energy conservation, emissions reduction, environmental protection, and sustainable development.
