The Shanghai Municipal Institute of Architectural Design was founded in the 1950s and reestablished in March 1987. It is affiliated with the Shanghai Municipal Housing and Land Resources Administration and was transformed into a limited liability company in 2004. Over the more than 30 years since its establishment, the institute has grown into a comprehensive Class-A architectural design research institute with a full range of specialties, strong technical capabilities, and expertise spanning architectural planning and design, real estate investment planning and consulting, building engineering research, forensic appraisal, cultural heritage preservation, and other multidisciplinary fields.
The institute excels in the planning and design of various industrial and civil buildings, as well as in urban renewal and renovation of existing housing in old districts, building quality inspection, seismic evaluation and reinforcement, and has amassed extensive experience and a strong market reputation in these areas. In recent years, it has also achieved remarkable results in such fields as research on cultural buildings, development of new technologies, engineering consulting, ground improvement for soft soil foundations, deep excavation support systems, and real estate appraisal.
The design institute currently employs more than 150 professional and technical personnel, with over 72% holding mid- to senior-level professional titles, including more than 30 researchers, professor-level senior engineers, and senior engineers. It also boasts over 60 instances of nationally registered engineers in specialties such as architecture and structural engineering. The institute has assembled a large pool of highly skilled professionals in urban planning, architecture, structural engineering, interior design, water supply and drainage, electrical engineering, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, municipal engineering, engineering surveying, computer technology, real estate appraisal, and engineering economic management.

The design institute is recognized as the Shanghai Design Innovation Center, a Shanghai “Specialized, Refined, Distinctive, and Innovative” SME, a Putuo District Little Giant Enterprise, a Putuo District–designated Enterprise Technology Center, a Shanghai Civilized Unit for five consecutive terms, and a nationally recognized trustworthy enterprise in the architectural design industry.
