China’s skyscraper, the Shanghai Tower, will “grow” to 200 meters this year.

According to Shanghai Tower Construction & Development Co., Ltd., construction of China’s tallest skyscraper—the Shanghai Tower—is progressing smoothly. The core tube of the main tower has now reached the 20th floor, with the building’s height exceeding 100 meters. Based on the current schedule, the “skyscraper dragon” is expected to reach a height of 200 meters within the year.
According to the briefing, the structural core of the Shanghai Tower is a concrete core tube that coordinates with the outrigger truss system and the mega-column system, while ring trusses provide support for the ground floors of each vertical zone. This design significantly simplifies and accelerates the construction process, enabling the rapid erection of this super-tall building through advanced construction technologies.
According to reports, the Shanghai Tower has now entered a phase of rapid and steady construction, with an average of one floor being added every five to six days. As planned, by the end of this year the building will reach the 48th floor, at a height of 200 meters.
The main structural height of the Shanghai Tower is 580 meters, with the pinnacle reaching 632 meters. Construction officially commenced in November 2008, and the building is expected to be completed in 2014.
The Shanghai Tower is designed with five underground levels and 121 above-ground floors, boasting a total floor area of 574,000 square meters—twice that of the adjacent Jin Mao Tower and 1.5 times that of the Shanghai World Financial Center. Upon completion, the tower will house a wide array of functions, including office space, dining, retail, hotel accommodations, conference facilities, exhibition areas, cultural venues, and entertainment options. Once fully operational, it will be able to accommodate up to 30,000 people working simultaneously, transforming into a 632-meter-tall “vertical city.”
The Shanghai Tower will also set a new benchmark for environmentally friendly and energy-efficient construction in China. The building adheres rigorously to both the domestic Three-Star Green Building Rating System and internationally recognized green-building standards. For instance, its double-skin glass curtain wall not only boasts a strikingly elegant and distinctive aesthetic but also delivers exceptional energy-saving performance. According to reports, because the Shanghai Tower features a dragon-shaped, spiraling upward form, the design and installation of its curtain-wall glazing present extraordinary technical challenges—and will therefore be executed using world-leading technologies.
