Three Projects of Our Company Listed Among the Second “Shanghai Municipal Demonstration Projects for the Protection and Utilization of Architectural Heritage”

On the afternoon of June 10, the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism (Shanghai Municipal Cultural Relics Administration) hosted the main event for the 2021 “Cultural and Natural Heritage Day” at the Friendship Hall of the Shanghai Exhibition Center, where the list of demonstration projects for the second Shanghai Architectural Heritage Protection and Utilization Initiative was officially unveiled to the public.
The Second Shanghai Demonstration Project Promotion Event for the Protection and Utilization of Architectural Heritage is guided by the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism (Shanghai Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage) and organized by the Shanghai Association of Cultural Heritage Conservation Engineering. The event aims to publicize and promote exemplary practices and experiences in the city’s efforts to protect and utilize architectural heritage, establish industry benchmarks, enhance the quality of cultural heritage conservation projects, and fully leverage the positive social benefits derived from such conservation achievements.
A total of ten projects are listed in this round of public announcement, three of which involve our company: the Protection and Restoration Project for the Site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China (including the Bowen Women’s School), the Protection and Restoration Project for the “Neighborhood Hub” on Tianping Street (No. 64 Urumqi South Road), and the Protection and Restoration Project for the Huaihai Building.

The Site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China is the birthplace of the CPC and the spiritual origin of its founding mission; the Bowen Women’s School was the former dormitory for delegates attending the First National Congress. This restoration project adheres to the principle of “restoring the old as it was” by employing traditional techniques and materials. Upon its reopening, the site will present itself in a state that most closely resembles its historical appearance from a century ago, thereby commemorating the centenary of the Party’s founding and showcasing the CPC’s cultural DNA, spiritual essence, and historical roots.

The main building of the Tianping Neighborhood Hub was constructed in 1932 and designed by László Hudec. While adhering to the principles of authenticity and integrity in preserving the historic fabric of the building, the project also renovated the existing structures within the courtyard, creating a multifunctional public space that accommodates leisure dining, cultural and recreational activities, exhibitions, and lectures. This seamless integration of preservation and adaptive reuse has transformed the site into a warm and inviting platform for community services and governance.

Built in 1931, the Huaihai Building—also known as the Empyrean Apartments—is a modern Art Deco–style structure entirely designed and constructed by Chinese architects and builders. The restoration project drew on historical blueprints to meticulously repair the exterior masonry, faithfully recreating the original window and door designs of the ground-floor shops. At the same time, the building’s mechanical and plumbing systems were upgraded to meet contemporary standards. Following the renovation, the Huaihai Building has emerged as a new urban landmark at the corner of Huaihai Middle Road and Changshu Road.
