Shangfang Courtyard Wins the Bronze Award and the Excellence Award in the First Shanghai Municipal Competition for Old Housing Renovation Design Proposals.

The award ceremony for the “First Shanghai Municipal Solicitation and Selection of Renovation Design Proposals for Old Residential Housing” was held on July 20, 2020. The renovation and upgrading of Shanghai’s aging residential neighborhoods go beyond mere cosmetic improvements; they also aim to meet the diverse needs of residents and create a more comfortable living environment. At the proposal of the Municipal Housing Administration, the event was jointly organized by the Shanghai Repair Affairs Center, the Shanghai Academy of Housing Science, the Shanghai Survey and Design Association, the Shanghai Construction Association, and other relevant organizations, marking the city’s inaugural public call for design proposals for old-housing renovation. This initiative represented the first time that design firms, design teams, and individual designers from across society were invited to submit their proposals for the renovation of old residential housing in Shanghai.
The inaugural competition attracted 60 design firms, organizations, and individual entrants, who submitted a total of 120 entries. These submissions encompassed renovation design proposals for a diverse range of building types, including multi-story employee housing, preserved traditional lane-house neighborhoods, and high-rise older residential buildings. Following on-site site visits, centralized Q&A sessions, and expert review, 30 projects ultimately received awards: 1 Grand Gold Award, 1 Grand Silver Award, 3 Grand Bronze Awards, 14 Outstanding Achievement Awards, 3 Awards for Excellent Architectural Facade Design, 3 Awards for Excellent Small-Scale Community Renewal and Renovation Design, 3 Awards for Excellent Space-Function Redesign, and 2 Awards for Comprehensive Economic and Technical Excellence.
Our company’s entry, “Working Together in Unity to Build a Beautiful ‘New’ Lianhua—Design Proposal for the Renovation of Old Residential Housing at Lianhua Apartment in Putuo District,” was awarded the Bronze Prize in the inaugural Shanghai Municipal Competition for Design Proposals on the Renovation of Old Residential Housing. The other two entries submitted—“Design Proposal for the Renovation of the Deyi Building as an Outstanding Historic Structure” and “Design Proposal for the Renovation of the Tongfu Building as an Outstanding Historic Structure”—both received the Excellence Award in the same competition.
This renovation project takes “safety, cleanliness, orderliness, and livability” as its guiding principles. While addressing residents’ most pressing concerns—urgent needs, difficult challenges, deep-seated worries, and heartfelt aspirations—it strives to create a high-quality community characterized by a beautiful environment, comprehensive amenities, enjoyable living, low-carbon sustainability, and smart energy efficiency. Together, we will build a vibrant “new” Lotus Community that embodies “peaceful housing, livable surroundings, joyful enjoyment, ecological harmony, and intelligent innovation.” Through these improvements, we aim to shed the label of “old, dilapidated, and small,” enabling the Lotus Apartment complex—a long-established residential area—to shine with a unique brilliance, just like lotus flowers bathed in the glow of the setting sun!
