The A4 plot project for the Luodian West Large-Scale Residential Community, designed by our institute, was awarded the Third Prize in the 2016 Shanghai Outstanding Residential Community Design Competition.
This project is Plot A4 of the supporting commercial housing development for the Luodian West Large-Scale Residential Community, located in Luodian Town, Baoshan District, Shanghai. The site is bounded by Meiping Road to the south, Luozhi Road to the east, Luxiang Road to the west, and Meian Road to the north, with a total land area of 60,983 square meters. Through a detailed analysis of the area’s locational characteristics and existing environmental conditions, the community has been designed as a vibrant, future-oriented residential district that fosters close connection with nature. The planning and design are firmly rooted in local context and guided by a people-centered approach, seamlessly integrating the internal landscape with the surrounding natural environment. This has resulted in a high-quality, ecologically rich landscape setting that is both inviting and uniquely charming, providing residents with a comfortable living environment and convenient access to everyday amenities.

In accordance with relevant national laws, policies, and regulations, the design of this project strives to embody a people-oriented design philosophy, with particular emphasis on such key principles as land-use allocation, traffic organization, fire safety, public health and disease prevention, environmental protection, energy conservation, and seismic-resistant structural design, while also demonstrating humanitarian concern for the elderly, the infirm, the disabled, and other vulnerable groups. The design incorporates innovative yet reliable technologies, materials, structural systems, and equipment.
Based on the existing conditions and characteristics of the site, in accordance with the requirements of the detailed regional planning, and through a well-organized and streamlined road network that ensures appropriate separation of pedestrian and vehicular traffic, this design employs contemporary architectural spatial composition techniques to thoughtfully interweave and arrange residential units that optimize natural daylighting, thereby creating a harmoniously integrated typological ensemble. The resulting spatially rich residential clusters are seamlessly integrated with the community’s landscape environment and the individual building forms, striving to achieve a design vision that is both harmonious and livable, while distinctly reflecting the local character of Luodian.
In accordance with the requirements of the detailed regional plan and to facilitate pedestrian flow, Plot A4 is located on the west side of the city’s main thoroughfare, Luxiang Road. The primary entrance to the site is set along Meiping Road, with secondary exits on Meian Road to the south. The community adopts an inner-ring road layout, with all internal access roads 7 meters wide and the entrance/exit sections 8.5 meters wide. Pedestrian traffic predominates within the community’s residential clusters, with sidewalks ranging from 1 to 2.5 meters in width. The pedestrian network is primarily organized around cluster gardens and centralized green spaces, which link the landscape systems of each cluster and are further integrated through plazas and small-scale architectural features that guide pedestrian routes. At key green and landscape nodes, centrally located amenity plazas are provided to serve as hubs for community interaction. Vehicle parking is planned at a ratio of 0.72 vehicles per residential unit, with supporting facilities designed in compliance with relevant codes and standards, including 30 parking spaces for public buildings, for a total of 676 vehicle parking spaces. Non-motorized vehicle parking is provisioned at 1.5 units per household. The predominant parking solution is an underground parking garage, supplemented by limited surface-level parking in select areas.
The landscaping for Plot A4 covers an area of 21,344 square meters, with a green space ratio of 35%. Of this, the centralized green space spans 6,100 square meters, accounting for a centralized green space ratio of 10%. The landscape design is closely integrated with the environmental design, serving to purify and regulate indoor air quality, reduce external noise, and improve the microclimate. In terms of form, the design employs a combination of points, lines, and planes, with carefully selected tree species that harmonize with water features, small architectural elements, lawns, walking paths, and buildings to create a beautiful, cohesive residential environment. This provides residents with excellent spaces for activities and recreation, while ensuring that every household enjoys attractive views from their windows.
The focal point of landscape design lies in greening, employing contemporary landscape-design techniques to present, in a holistic and immersive way—through form, color, and fragrance—the exquisite beauty of harmonious coexistence between people and nature to urban dwellers. By thoughtfully and rationally arranging water features, lawns, hardscapes, and lush vegetation, and by integrating these elements with a three-dimensional spatial layout that complements the individual residential units, the design seamlessly blends optimal orientation with superior views. This approach not only ensures equitable living conditions across all residences but also maximizes the richness of natural and ecological landscapes, imbuing the entire community with a poetic and picturesque ambiance.
